2021年にイギリス大学院留学を思い立ってから約2年。８年勤めた教職を辞め、2023年９月からイギリス大学院修士課程に進学する予定です。

この数年間は、プロジェクトリーダーを経験したり、学校運営に関わったりと、中堅メンバーとして経験を重ね、キャリアも順調に積み上げてきました。
実は、大学院留学を思い立つまでは、
「留学したい！」「イギリスに行きたい！」
と思ったことは一度もありませんでした。仕事もやりがいがあり、日本で家族と過ごす生活にも満足していました。
では、
「なぜ順調なキャリアを捨てて、社会人からイギリス大学院留学？」
今回は、私が『社会人留学』するに至った経緯をお話ししていきたいと思います。
封印していた小学生のころからの夢 コロナ禍で再燃
2021年夏、長引く自粛生活。
「教職は好きだし、自分はこのまま教員を続けるんだろうな・・・」
そう思っていましたが、どことなくモヤモヤした毎日を過ごしていました。
そんなある日、ふとTVを観ると『元アナウンサーが国連職員になって難民支援に奮闘！』という特集が。
見た瞬間、ハッとしました。TVの画面には「自分が諦めてしまった夢を叶えている人」がキラキラと映っていたのです。
小学生のころ「イラク戦争」に衝撃を受け、将来の夢は長らく「国連職員」でした。
「『国際協力』業界に入って紛争地で働きたい！」その思いは高校生になるまで続きました。
しかし、大学受験期。
「国際協力？不安定な職種だぞ？」
まわりの大人たちから投げかけられる厳しい言葉の数々にすっかり弱気になってしまった私は、ずっと大切にしてきた夢をいとも簡単に諦めてしまいました。いつしか『国際協力』したいという夢も現実から遠のき、安定か挑戦の二択を迫られた私は迷うことなく「安定した生活」を選んだのでした。
「行動するなら今だ！」
番組終了後、私は、いてもたってもいられず「国際協力業界で働く方法」を調べました。
もう絶対、後悔したくない。これが「大学院留学」を目指す第一歩でした。
「イギリス大学院留学」という選択肢との出会い
米国ドラマ「Glee」好きが高じて、NYへ短期語学留学をしたくらいアメリカ好きな私。そんな私が「なぜイギリス大学院留学」を選んだのか？
ずばり一言で言えば、イギリスは、
①『国際協力』発祥の地だったから！
②修士号を１年で取得することができるから！
これに尽きます。調べていくと、『国際協力』業界で働く人々の多くは、『開発学（Development Studies）』を専攻されることが多く、この学問はイギリス発祥なのだそうです。ちなみに、『開発学』世界ランキング上位５校中４校はイギリスの大学が占めており、世界をリードする研究が行われています。（もう１校はアメリカの大学）また、アメリカや日本では、修士号を取るのに２年は必要です。つまり、学費や生活費など費用も半分で済むということはとても魅力的でした。
学びたい学問の本場であること、最短・低コストで学べるということがイギリスへ留学する決め手となりました。
キャリアを積み重ねた社会人の今、だからこそ留学しよう！
かつての夢を思い出し、社会人留学を決意した私。当初はだいぶ遠回りをした自分を恨みました。しかし、社会人として多くの経験と知識を得たこの瞬間が「留学するベストタイミング」だったと今は思います。
社会人のみなさん、物事を始めるにはいつだって遅くないですよ！
