私は、語学学校に1年間通いました。
初めの数ヶ月英語が全く話せませんでした。話せないのでもちろん自信がありません。
おそらく留学経験のある方なら共感していただけると思いますが、この自信のなさが顕著に現れるのはディスカッションの時です。
地獄のディスカッション
私の通っていた語学学校では、授業の半分くらいはクラス内でのディスカッションでした。
先生が議題を投げかけて、それについてフリーでみんなで話し合うという形式でした。
毎日が地獄でした
他国の生徒は、がんがん発言している中で、
参加しないと先生に怒られ、話を振られても英語で自分の意見を伝えられないもどかしさもありました。
英語のレベルでクラス分けされていたので他の生徒とも英語レベルはほぼ同じはずですが、積極的に自信満々に発言をする他国の生徒を見て負い目を感じていました。
自分が下手な英語を話すことで授業が止まってしまう…
そもそも今考えていることが質問の答えで合ってるのか…
そんなことを考えていました。
実際、自分の発言で授業が止まったり、質問と関係のない答えを言ってしまったことが何度もありました。
このまま卒業まで自分から積極的に話さずにいようとも考えていました。
そんな気持ちがあることがきっかけで突然変わりました。
きっかけは、些細なことでした。
自分が変われた些細なきっかけ
携帯でメールを見ていたら留学にかかった費用の明細を見つけました。
その費用を見て、こう思いました。
英語を話せるようになるためにこんな高い費用払ったんだろ！
それからは積極的に話すことを意識し、ディスカッションの時は1番初めに話そうと心がけるようになりました。
以前よりも英語を話す機会が増えたので、英語の上達は早まり、何より今日の授業料の元を取れた気分がして充実感がありました。
それでも質問と違うことを言ったり、自分の意見を正しく伝えられない時もありました。
そのようなシチュエーションになった時の対処法を特別にお教えします。
- 違うことを言ったと思ったら全力の愛想笑いを。
- 自分の意見を正しく伝えられない時は、正しく伝えようとすることを一旦諦める。その場は、分かる単語でなんとか文章にして発言する。嘘もOK！
場合によっては、自分の意見と真逆のことを言わないといけません。
言えなかった自分の意見は、後で調べて後日話せるようになれば良いのです。
嘘で固めたエピソード
ここであるエピソードがあります。
先生から質問を投げかけられた時の話です。
先生「あなたの地元の人は、どんな人が多いですか？」
自分「優しい人が多いです。会ったら挨拶されますし、私が困っていたら必ず助けてくれます！」
実際は、すれ違っても挨拶されたことはないですし、私が困っていても助けられたことはありません。
同じクラスの日本人に10回くらいReally？と言われましたが、この回答を私は貫きました。
あのクラスにいた外国人には私の地元は良い街だと思われたことでしょう。
このように自分の意見を伝えるよりも話すことが大切だと思っていたので、何回も嘘をつきました。
ただ、嘘をついていることへの後ろめたさとやはり自分の意見を伝えたいという気持ちから勉強を頑張り、徐々に自分の意見を言えるように訓練していきました。今では、外国人と嘘なく会話することができます。本当の自分を知ってもらえて嬉しいです。

英語に自信がないから積極的に話せない人は多いと思います。
しかし、なぜ語学学校に通っているのか？
英語を話せるようになりたいから高いお金を払って通っているわけです。
周りのクラスの生徒達は、自分と同じ授業料を払っています。
なら自分が得したいと思いませんか？
英語を話せば、話すだけ上達します。
私はそうでした。
自分の英語力に不安を感じ、躊躇する時間があれば何か一言話し始めた方が良いと思います。
